Participating DOE Laboratories and Sites
Ames Laboratory’s mission is to conduct fundamental research in the physical, chemical, materials, and mathematical sciences and engineering, which underlie energy generating, conversion, transmission, and storage technologies, environmental improvement, and other technical areas essential to national needs. Ames' core competencies are in the areas of advanced materials synthesis, characterization and procession, computational and theoretical sciences, environmental characterization, and remediation technologies.
For human subjects research, Ames utilizes Iowa State University’s Institutional Review Board, but currently no research involving human subjects is being conducted.
There is, however, a Former Worker Medical Surveillance Program conducted by the University of Iowa for interested former workers from Ames Laboratory and sponsored by the DOE Office of Health, Safety and Security (HS-15). The Ames IRB reviews medical screening protocols, informational materials, and consent forms for clarity and consistency.
